Devblog #36
Pretty quiet and relatively productive week it was. The inventory is almost ready, as is the shop that would sell you potions. And the Samhain festival is coming along too. Both of these new additions will likely get into the latest update. But since there's nothing particularly new to say about those, I though it would be a good time to talk about the designs of the girls and how we came from what was to where their characters stand today.
Let's start with Violet. Violet Novac. She was one of the first girls to be conceptualized and one of the girls that I had to fight for the most. Right off the bat I knew that I wanted to have a quiet and shy girl in the roster. Most of my "test audience" so to say insisted that she lacked the pzazz and that nobody would be interested in a girl like that. Well, only time will tell if that will turn out to be true. Anywho, in the very first draft, Violet was envisioned as a girl who likes to read and that's basically it. As you can see on the very first sketch, she had glasses right away, and I did like that design element. That did come into conflict with the rules of our magic world pretty quickly though. Think about it, people who can create elixirs of immortality, grow bones and other body parts, people with healing potions of unthinkable power. And they cannot heal shortsightedness? That's just plain strange! So we had to come up with a reason for Violet to wear glasses, and so her strange and incurable sickness/curse was born. That also immediately filled up most of the other blanks in her character. She doesn't have many friends because she has to move a lot with her parents trying to find a cure. She prefers to stay inside and read because her special condition doesn't go well with outdoors activities. The rest of her character and interaction with the MC was built from there on. But I will not go into the details here.
Violet's other notable characteristic is her dislike for the Ruachan students. Male Ruachan students in particular. It was really a toss-up between Cairngorm and Ruachan, but we went with Ruachan in the end, and so Lily got Cairngorm as the result. Having girls that will not date the MC from a specific house was something that I wanted to do right from the conception of the game. And since I wanted to have one with such a preference from each house, Violet got the short straw in Dunagall. What happened to her that she came to dislike Ruachan in particular? Who knows. She might've been bullied by some jerk or another. Or maybe there just was some misunderstanding that didn't get cleared up in time. Regardless, that prior event in Violet's life prevents her from opening up to MC. Well, at least Ruachan boys still get Lily, right?
Well, I guess that's all that comes to mind about Violet right now. I'll talk about other girls some of the upcoming devblogs. Comment on who you want to hear about next.
I will see you all next week then!

Just look at that face on the bottom-middle, the art is so good.
Violet is the best girl, and I'll stand by that fact 'till the end
Always good to get more context on the characters. I'm glad you chose to stick with Violet, her character archetype is actually one of my favorites when it comes to romance, that of the shy outcast/loner. Had no idea about the house restrictions on certain girls, so that's one to tuck away into the ol' memory banks for future runs. Will probably get to the latest patch this evening, last couple days have been hectic irl. And as always, pleasure seeing you again Shady 1 & 2, reading the devlogs always provides a warmly welcomed shift to my routine.
Yes, all four of the starting girls have one house that they will not like.
And thank you for all your comments, they do help us to keep us motivated =D
