Devblog #45

At first, I was going to make another regular devblog today, but then I took a look at the calendar and it turned out that it has been a year since we assembled our first Under Your Spell game build. We initially planned on publishing it on June 10th 2024. But decided to delay for another month to add some more backgrounds. Damn, the game looked empty at that time. But that's not what I wanted to look at right now, but instead on what had change withing this year.

We started with four girls: Aisling, Lily, Violet and Gwen. Each of whom had only three events. And each event had around 400 words on average. After a year of work, we now have seven girls, expanding the roster with Katelyn, Ciara and Elizabeth. Each of them now have five events, and each even is averaging at 1000 words.

The 0.1.0 build had around 15000 words in it. Which in itself was a bit of an achievement for me. In version 0.3.1, I am now closing on the 85000 words mark. Which shows how the game grew in these 12 months.

8 semi-random events that introduced the classes and that were available on start, now turned into 32 events (more than 50 if you count the small ones) that are now spread around varies activities.

Inventory and shopping got added to the game.

Eleven original music tracks.

And of course a whole metric tonne of art! We started with only 9 backgrounds and five character sprites (4 girls and Eric). Today we have 20 background artworks (still placeholder though), some of those having day/evening variations. 21 sprite for different characters. And the sprites for girls became much more varied and expressive! And 9 full-screen artworks (soon to be 10). Some of those are even NSFW.

I would be lying if I said that the development didn't present us with a few of unforeseen challenges. And that everything is going just as we planned for it to go back at that point. But looking at these numbers now, I definitely say that we are moving forward.

A lot more is still coming. Proper sound design. More artworks. Journal. Proper backgrounds. Card collection. Gallery. And of course, continuation of the girls' and your storylines!

I hope you are excited for things to come! Here's an unfinished Under Your Spell logo that we were planning to use back in the day.

I think I first downloaded the build around Dec. or Jan., even comparing the progress from then onwards is really exciting.

While writing for the events for the girls', how are you 'certain' if its right. When Under Your Spell is fully finished, would you revamp previous events- or just dialogue, to fit how you've reimagined their personalities?

Honestly, I never am "certain"... I tend to constantly mull over the events and plotlines in my head, until it is time to "put them to paper", after which, as a rule, I stick to what was written.

I have already revised some of the earlier events slightly, and I constantly looking back at the old events to see if I can tweak a thing or two, maybe add another sentence or put in a choice. But I don't think there will ever be any major re-writes. It is really difficult for me to change what has already been written. Not in the emotional, but in actually "writing things" way. But there is still a lot of ways I could improve those earlier events, I just need to find ways to do so.

It's amazing what the two of you have been able to achieve in just one short year, guess it goes to show that passion and talent can more than compensate for team size. Glad I got in at what seems like the right time for moi, can't imagine the game without Elizabeth in it. Here's to another fruitful year and your success Shady 1 & 2, can't wait to see what comes next.

Have you only joined us after Elizabeth have been introduced? It feels like you have been here forever at this point! Hard to imagine imagine itch without you 😁

Appreciate it man, been a hella fun time so far. Not usually too social if I'm being honest, but Under Your Spell and several other projects on Itch make me wish I'd gotten into indie games and AVNs a lot sooner than I did.
